As we approached Tarpum Bay, it looked like a very cute town with a lovely church on the water and a pier right by the town. As usual, the pier seems to be the local gathering place for men, some fishermen, but mostly just town’s people hanging out and having a beer while talking and laughing a lot.
The main area of the town is right on the ocean, with restaurants, guesthouses and a few other shops. The grocery store is behind the elementary school and opposite the sport fields. There’s a big area which is definitely allocated for community fares with many stalls alongside the basketball field, the newly built pickle ball court as well as a reasonably well maintained baseball field.
Not unlike a lot of towns and settlements in the Bahamas, they had a cemetery right on the ocean. The difference is that this one had a good sense of humor too.
We walked around some more and overall it is a pretty town with colorful buildings, a beautiful church on the bay, many restaurants, some free range chickens and friendly people.
Unfortunately it seemed like a lot of the guest houses were abandoned, but hopefully it is because it is the end of the season and maybe it is customary to even take out the electric meters until after hurricane season. I suppose we’ll only find out if we get back here next year LOL.
Castle Mac Millan is indicated on the charts and we thought that it would be a nice landmark to visit. It turned out to be a private residence and obviously, no visitors allowed.
We enjoyed the quaint little town but it was time to move on to the next stop which is only about nine nautical miles to the north.
